Raymond E. Brown was the class text for my Masters course on John at Providence Seminary Manitoba Canada. I was amazed that we would be study a R.C. text. It didn’t take me long to recognize the sound scholarship.
I too recommend the Eerdmans Bible Commentary. A bit more liberal than the others perhaps, but the authors were really the top exegetes at the beginning of the 21 century (Dunn, Barclay, Furnish, Freedman… ). Even though it’s brief, with such authors I can be assured that they really have done a good exegetical work, even though they can’t give us all the details.
